Ep. 37 Hospital sham peer review: what doctors need to know

Lawrence R. Huntoon, MD, PhD

Peer review by colleagues is an important process by which doctors who misbehave or malpractice can be held accountable and, if necessary, prevented from harming patients.  Unfortunately, the process can also be used in bad faith, and many physicians are completely unaware of how career-destroying traps can be set up under the guise of peer review, compromising even the most caring and competent of doctors.

Our guest is Lawrence R. Huntoon, MD, PhD, a world expert on the topic of “sham” peer review.  Dr. Huntoon is editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and he leads the organization’s Committee to Combat Sham Peer Review.

So glad you did this interview with Dr. Huntoon. He is the most knowledgeable person worldwide on the phenomenon of dishonest, i.e. sham, peer review. For those unfamiliar, sham peer review is the hijacking of an otherwise legitimate quality assurance mechanism turned corrupt. It’s a malevolent vehicle used to trash a physician’s career and essentially deprive them of due process behind the facade of a fair peer review process. Our own group, CPR – The Center for Physician Rights (www.PhysicianRights.net) is helping to bring to light this phenomenon along with sham “fitness for duty” evaluation by a medical licensing board’s affiliated state PHP (“physicians health program”) and the resultant ensnarement in what appears to be a veritable “impaired physicians treatment racket.” We are proud to highlight Dr. Huntoon’s and AAPS’ groundbreaking work in this area. Very few know that AAPS offers its members a personalized hotline for physicians dealing with sham peer review. This alone makes membership in AAPS invaluable. I had no idea that doctors could attack another doctor so viciously without cause. I believed we were all dedicated to the best patient care. SHOCKING, why are we not doing anything.
